About Us

WHAT IS THE NEVADA LIBRARY COOPERATIVE?

As a group, the cooperative takes advantage of sharing resources and revenues, making it economically feasible to do more together than any one library could ever afford to on its own.

Reference and research services.  Special events, children’s and family programs.  Books on tape, in print, CD & on-line.  Music, newspaper, magazines, videos, microfilm, and maps.  Access to electronic databases, library catalogs, reference assistance and government information.

MINERAL COUNTY LIBRARY

Here at Mineral County Library we have had to do a bit of reinventing. A new Boys & Girls club began about a year ago with activities that are similar to our summer reading program and story time activities. So we decided to shift away from our traditional activities and provide what is in short supply in this rural Nevada town – live performances and special classes. With the new Community Enrichment Grant schedule we are now able to provide special events during the fall and holiday season. We have already hosted a jazz group and a music history group as well as a Halloween painting class and pumpkin carving class, all in October. In November we have a magician and in December a group performing The Grinch. The performers are from the Pioneer Center Youth Program which is doing a terrific job of providing rural Nevada with top-notch performances. Hawthorne is actually the furthest their groups have traveled and we are grateful!

We are also working on early childhood literacy in a way that is possible for our staff. We will soon have Family Literacy meetings with parents and children to identify two core groups of children whose progress we will informally follow this year with our new AWE stations. We have a desktop and two tablets for both the Early Learning and the After School Edge stations. Nevada Families First Hawthorne NV has been in to check out the learning stations as have some “beta” testers from among the staffs’ children. We have received positive reviews from all! These discovery stations help us to stress literacy without adding too much extra work for our small staff – always an important consideration.
